Heart Health
Dear Friends of Mother Earth,
Spring is coming! The mythical Persephone arises from the underworld to greet her mother Demeter, who celebrates their reunion with the new growth and greenery of spring. Descent into the underworld represents the season of winter, as crops die back and animals hibernate. It can also represent a time of rest and reflection, specifically getting in touch with the unconscious part of our selves and our realities. I had the opportunity this winter to read four books of the Diamond Series by A. H. Almaas, and I’m currently reading “The Dark Side of the Light Chasers” by Debbie Ford. Each of these books helped me in my “descent into the underworld”, by helping me look at my life and my self a little deeper. How did you “descend into the underworld” this winter? Often the cold weather can slow us down to enjoy more nights at home with family, to read a book or to hibernate with more rest and gaining a few extra pounds (not necessarily a bad thing!). I hope that you come out of this winter with renewed energy and motivation.

Heart Health
Both the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation and the American Heart Association name February “Heart Month”. Along with this theme I offer some practical suggestions for heart health.
It is important to consult a physician for professional advise whenever heart conditions exist. With that in mind, please consider the following suggestions to complement your medical treatment and to aid in prevention of heart disease.
Two of the most important foods or supplements for heart health are omega 3 fatty acids (found in many vegetable and fish oils) and garlic. According to the American Heart Association, research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids decrease risk of arrhythmias, decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque, and lower blood pressure. Garlic is a super food that taken in any form, raw, cooked and in a supplement, has cardiovascular and anti-cancer benefits. It is high in anti-oxidants, including selenium; it is a natural anti-biotic and research shows similar benefits mentioned above for omega 3’s.
Two beneficial herbs for heart health are hawthorne and motherwort. Hawthorne is a tonic that strengthens and dilates blood vessels and is useful for heart conditions and for prevention of heart disease. Its action is not immediate, so one needs to take it long term. Hawthorne also has a calming effect on the nervous system. Motherwort is another heart tonic, especially indicated to calm nervous heart symptoms such as palpitations from anxiety. At Mother Earth one can find these herbs in many forms: juice, tincture, tea bags and loose herb or powder.
In aromatherapy, rose essential oil gently opens the heart to release pent up emotions and comforts sorrow and heartache. One can use rose essential oil as a perfume, in the bath or in a diffuser (from The Aromatherapy Bible by Gill Farrer-Halls).
The heart chakra corresponds with love and joy. When the heart chakra is out of balance, one may lack confidence and be unable to let go of fears. When in balance one feels energized and has the strength to fulfill hopes and dreams and to give and receive unconditional love. See The Chakra Energy Plan by Anna Selby for ways to open and balance this chakra.
In You Can Heal Your Life, Louise L. Hay describes the heart as the center of love and security. She believes a heart attack could be caused by “squeezing all the joy out of the heart in favour of money or position” and her recommended new thought pattern is “I bring joy back to the center of my heart, I express love to all.” Hay sees heart problems as indicating long-standing emotional problems, a lack of joy, a hardening of the heart or a belief in strain and stress and her recommended new thought pattern is, “Joy, joy, joy. I lovingly allow joy to flow through my mind and body experience.”
As I collected these natural health suggestions from the resources in the store, I couldn’t help but reflect on the meaning of heart disease. Heart disease is the number one cause of adult death in North America. We can easily see the correlation between heart disease and poor diet, lack of exercise, and other lifestyle factors, such as smoking, but what might be the deeper issues? If we associate the heart chakra with love and joy, this begs the question: as a continent that avidly pursues love through romance/affairs and joy through entertainment, is heart disease also a sign of superficiality or lack of real love, the kind that is lasting, unconditional and unlimited? We access this love through a connection with the divine and our higher self. My wish is that we all heal our hearts through the pursuit of deeper love and spiritual connection.
